Technology

Ohio, the home of Edison, the Wright Brothers, Glenn and Armstrong remains at the forefront of innovation and leadership. Scientists exploring the deepest secrets of the physical universe. Engineers creating new manufacturing environments. Students at all levels questioning the world before them and designing new careers for themselves.

It’s been stated that "competitiveness in world markets depends increasingly on the products of knowledge." While natural resources and plentiful labor were the primary ingredients of industry as we knew it in years past, today’s businesses need world-class science, engineering, technical and educational resources. Knowledge is the key today to global competitiveness. Joint efforts by state and federal governments, industry, academic institutions and labor unions are constantly upgrading Ohio’s research and development infrastructure, improving the climate for innovation and nurturing the resources for a technology based economy. Our schools and universities have programs in place providing skilled technicians, liberal arts and business graduates, scientists and engineers to support the thriving economic renaissance in south central Ohio.

Among the nationally recognized research oriented universities that serve the area are Shawnee State University, Ohio University, Ohio State University, University of Dayton, Wright State University, University of Cincinnati, and University of Rio Grande. Undergraduate and graduate programs at these universities offer literally hundreds of areas of study. As a new and developing university, Shawnee State University is in an ideal position to design innovative degree programs that will meet the area’s training needs well into the next century.      When it comes to turning basic research and innovative technology into commercial processes and products, Ohio leads the nation in successful technology transfer programs. Eight Edison Centers for Advanced Technology link Ohio’s top research institutions with Ohio companies ready to implement new technology. Using private, state and federal funds the centers offer expertise and spearhead research in processes important to Ohio manufacturing. Ohio’s Super Computer Center, the only state-funded super computer center in the country, supports the industrial base throughout the region. The world’s largest chemical transfer organization, Chemical Abstracts, serves both government and industry. Battelle Memorial Institute a world class technology center has more than 60 years experience moving technology from concept to the marketplace.

Natural Resources

The region possesses abundant natural resources with more than 7 million acres of forest reserves, vast fresh water supplies, extensive natural gas deposits, ample coal reserves for the next 200 years, and substantial quantities of sand, gravel, clay, shale and limestone. The supply of hardwoods sustains primary and secondary forest products industries exceeding five billion dollars per year.
