Historic Boneyfiddle
Portsmouth was settled more than 190 years ago on the banks of the Ohio River in an area that is called Boneyfiddle. For nearly half of the city's history, Boneyfiddle was the center of downtown Portsmouth. Its position as the city's central business district however, began to fade as they city's development continued to grow to the east and north of Boneyfiddle. Boneyfiddle was geographically and economically on the periphery of the city's downtown business district. As a result, Boneyfiddle declined economically, and physically as many of its buildings were seriously neglected. Today this is no longer the case. New major rehabilitation efforts have been carried out in Boneyfiddle as exemplified by the restoration of Washington House and the Brewery Arcade.
The unique aspect about Boneyfiddle is that much of its original commercial core remains intact and includes a coherent and potentially rich and exciting collection of 19th century commercial buildings. Boneyfiddle has all the essential physical and environmental ingredients necessary to again become a viable tourist oriented business district. Its natural and man-made resources which are now being rediscovered, provide an unusually strong foundation upon which a coordinated economic revitalization program can be based. Many of the revitalization program's development components have been successfully used in similar situations in other parts of the country. Their application to Boneyfiddle are designed and scaled to maximize the area's economic opportunities, and to augment other specific revitalization proposals unique to Boneyfiddle.
