Alexandria/Stone HouseAlexandria was settled in the late 1700's by pioneers who came down the Ohio River in flatboats. It was located in the bottom land west of the old mouth of the Scioto River, near Carey's Run.The original settlers had hopes the village would one day become a very influential city. Because of frequent, devastating floods in the area, the village was unable to survive and by 1814 most of the citizens had moved to the higher ground of Portsmouth. The only remnant of Alexandria that remains today is the Philip Moore Jr. Stone House. The original deed to the property states it was located on an outlot of Alexandria. It stands today on State Route 239 in West Portsmouth and has been restored to its original appearance. The house is furnished with period pieces. Next four screens show this mural in full.
