"Branch Rickey"

This mural depicts Branch Rickey, baseball immortal, as he appeared at the height of his illustrious career. It features Mr. Rickey signing Jackie Robinson to a Brooklyn Dodger contract in 1947, thereby breaking the color barrier which had existed in major league baseball until that time. Also featured is a picture of the Portsmouth Red Birds of 1938, a minor league franchise owned by the St. Louis Cardinals of whom Branch Rickey was the General Manager. Other references are made to Mr. Rickey's character including his role as baseball player and manager, educator, orator, and devout religious and family man. Mr. Rickey was a native of Stockdale, near Portsmouth, and received his early education in Lucasville. Completed in 1994.
