Our Workforce Scioto County's labor force has proven it’s productivity finishing several large projects on time and under budget and built to exacting standards. Among the nationally recognized research oriented universities that serve the area are Shawnee State University, Ohio University, Ohio State University, University of Dayton, Wright State University, University of Cincinnati, and University of Rio Grande. Undergraduate and graduate programs at these universities offer literally hundreds of areas of study. When it comes to turning basic research and innovative technology into commercial processes and products, Ohio leads the nation in successful technology transfer programs. Eight Edison Centers for Advanced Technology link Ohio’s top research institutions with Ohio companies ready to implement new technology. Using private, state and federal funds the centers offer expertise and spearhead research in processes important to Ohio manufacturing. Ohio’s Super Computer Center, the only state-funded super computer center in the country, supports the industrial base throughout the region. The world’s largest chemical transfer organization, Chemical Abstracts, serves both government and industry. Battelle Memorial Institute a world class technology center has more than 60 years experience moving technology from concept to the marketplace. Natural Resources The region possesses abundant natural resources with more than 7 million acres of forest reserves, vast fresh water supplies, extensive natural gas deposits, ample coal reserves for the next 200 years, and substantial quantities of sand, gravel, clay, shale and limestone. Ohio’s clean coal technology programs fund private sector research projects helping assure a cleaner and more efficient use of coal for the years to come. The supply of hardwoods sustains primary and secondary forest products industries exceeding five billion dollars per year.
